False Summits

The False Summits

For anyone who has ever done any hiking, especially above the tree line, you’ll understand the frustration of a “false summit”. You set out with your goal in mind: reaching the top! Only, as you climb, you are greeted and given false hope by peaks that, to your unknowing eye, seem to be the top, only they are not. So as you climb your excitement goes through the roof as you think you’ve almost made it, only to be disappointed that the climb goes on…

How often are our hopes shot down by “false summits”? We walk through life with goals, hopes, and expectations that we try to plan to the best of our ability, but are often met with false hopes. Just as soon as we think we’ve “made it”, something happens or changes that informs us otherwise. But that doesn’t mean the hike is over. The false peaks, the trials and struggles, the false hopes…never do they take away from the magical experience of reaching the top. In most cases, they only enhance it!
